Boy at War

Week #4: The End (5/31-6/5)
This week you will be finishing your books.  As you read I want you to think about how the book ends in relation to how it started.

1. How did the main character change?
2. What are the important ideas (conflicts, character traits, people, places) that you plan to include in your research?
3. Choose one quote to represent something important from the book. Be sure to explain why you chose that quote.

Don't forget to respond to other posts by asking questions, providing memorial suggestions, or offering your opinion.

Week #3 Author's Purpose:Reading assignment for 5/18-5/25
Ch. 11-17 (read chapter 17!)
This week I want you to focus on the main character, his/her driving characteristics as well as your overall impression of the group of people in history the main character represents (the perspective your book is about—like:an American soldier, a holocaust survivor, or a German who resisted the Nazis).

Please post your thoughts on at least two of these questions:

  • What are the external conflicts the protagonist faces? How does the author describe this and make it important?
  • What are the internal conflicts he/she is dealing with? What are the author's ideas about this, can you get a sense of their tone or opinion?
  • What do you think the main character will or should do? Does the author give any foreshadowing clues?
  • What are the most admirable character traits of the main character? What evidence does the author give of these traits?

  2. I am confused about Adam and Davi's relationship. Are they friends but hate each other? I feel as if they’re relationship will become stronger during the book and not just have them “Play fighting.” All the time.

  6. Why would Adam hang out with Davi after Adam dad said not to be friends with him?

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise, but Japan and the United States had been edging toward war for decades. ... The Japanese government believed that the only way to solve its economic and demographic problems was to expand into its neighbor’s territory and take over its import market; to this end, Japan had declared war on China in 1937. ... They reasoned that without access to money and goods, and especially essential supplies like oil, Japan would have to rein in its expansionism.

  7. Why does Adams dad not want him to be friends with Davi?

The bombing of Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack on the United States by Japan. The reason that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor is because Japan didn’t want the U.S Pacific Fleet getting involved in their war against South Asia. That idea didn’t really go so well for Japan because after that the United States decided to get involved with World War 2

  9. Why did Adam stay with Davi If he knew his dad was on the Arizona? His dad could have seen him with Davi, It was very surprising when Adam attacked Davi, I know that Adam thought Davi was the cause of bombing but they're friends, he didn't even ask Davi he just attacked him, I also found the bombing very surprising because I thought Davi and Adam were just hanging out, then out of know were a bombing goes off.

  10. Why was Martin with Davi when they went fishing?

It was confusing when Martin and Davi weren't taking the attack as seriously as Adam was taking it, It's like they knew but it seems like they didn't know at the same time, so we won't know unless we keep on reading if they were a part of the attack, It was either a coincidence or not.

  12. Adam has shown to be a really strong character these couple of chapters and he resembles his father, I think this will foreshadow the upcoming future of the next chapters where Adam finds his dad dead and becomes just like him and becomes a sailor also. The way it described how he held the gun showed multiple foreshadowing clues from Adam. The Boy At War states “The

He kept shooting, even after the plane disappeared.” I felt like this short paragraph will foreshadow Adam’s future later on, it describes how he liked the way the gun felt and he was excited to shoot which probably means he will go back out there and try to find his dad but end up in some danger.

    2. I actually disagree, Adam did like they way the gun felt but I think Adam was afraid of the Japanese the book said " he kept taking steps. He knew It wasn't wrong to worry about his mother and sister... but was he making excuses for himself?" Adam was afraid to be out there and I think he liked the way the gun felt because most boys would find shooting a gun fun. The book also say's a driver offered Adam a ride and Adam was in the back of the truck in a second, because he didn't want to wait for the Japanese to attack because he isn't like his father and doesn't find the war fun.

  13. I predict that Adam will go home but his mother and sister won’t be home, because they went looking for Adam, and then Adam will end up looking for his mother and sister. The author gives us readers a few clues like “cars on lawns were being loaded with boxes and bedding. A boy on a bicycle sped by yelling, Don’t drink the water. I heard on the radio It was poisoned.” Those clues pointed out that people might have known the Japanese were bombing, which is why Adam’s mom might have been worried and went out looking for Adam. I really admire the fact that Adam didn’t know Mr. Brown but he was kind enough to get to know him. I also really admired that when the bombing happened and Davi an Martin were hurt and even though Adam was hurt not only was he brave but caring and kept looking for David and Martin. The author gives traits of Adam like “ It was taking so long to get to Martin and Davi. He kept looking up afraid the planes would come back.” What the author was saying was Adam was scared but still brave at the same time.

    1. I love how you dove deep in the details about the water being poisoned, that could predict many things. It may predict a death or like you said the people might of known that the Japanese were bombing.

  14. I think Adam should go back to the gate and protect it. Because that what his father would want him to do and all the training his dad has given him. I predict that martin is going to die because of the pice of the stick he got in the chest.

  15. I think that atom should, go with his mother, so it will not be so hard on his mom. like leaving him behind or not having help around the house. I think that Adam sister is going to find out that his dad is dead and shy is going to get up set.

  16. Overall The Boy At War was a really good book. The book was a cliff hanger you never know If Adam's dad came back, or what happened to Davi and his father. Before I finished the book I didn't think Adam would end up like his father but after I finished the book the author gave clues that Adam would end up like his father for an example "He had gone out In the morning riding his bike down the Kamehameha Highway, and he had come home that night carrying a gun". Adam's life changed and Adam changed, I think he will finish what his father started. I admire Adam's mom and how strong she Is, she has hope that Adam's father Is still alive. Adam's mom care's so much about Bea and him, a quote from what Adam's mother said to Adam was "What would I do without you? I would miss you too much." Which Is how you know she care's for Adam so much. Some big conflicts I noticed was when Adam and his mother received the letter Informing them that Adam's father had been missing, It made Adam loose hope that his father was no longer alive. Another big conflict I noticed was when Adam was apologizing to Davi fro what happened on the boat, I felt really bad for Davi and how his father got taken from him for being Japanese and Adam attacked Davi on the boat for being Japanese. After reading the book It make's me want to read more of the book and It make's me want to know what had happened to all of the characters.

    1. I agree with you, I think Bea ( Adam's sister) Is going to find out that her father might be dead, and Adam did go with his mother because he couldn't stay with Davi because he go taken away for being Japanese.

  18. Adam faced some pretty hard stuff searching for his father AND leaving him behind. Leaving his father behind must’ve been really hard on him and his mom. He wanted to stay and be there for his dad when he came back but he could not, and I feel like this will lead to a problem. Is his dad alive? If he is, he’s gonna be searching for his family and they’re not gonna be there and he’s gonna be alone. I also feel as if the author foreshadows Davi’s dad and Adams dad meeting up somehow later on in a different book.
