The Girl Who Survived

Week #4: The End (5/31-6/5)
This week you will be finishing your books.  As you read I want you to think about how the book ends in relation to how it started.

1. How did the main character change?
2. What are the important ideas (conflicts, character traits, people, places) that you plan to include in your research?
3. Choose one quote to represent something important from the book. Be sure to explain why you chose that quote.

Don't forget to respond to other posts by asking questions, providing memorial suggestions, or offering your opinion.

Week #3 Author's Purpose:
Reading assignment for 5/18-5/25
Ch. 7-9 (read chapter 9!)
This week I want you to focus on the main character, his/her driving characteristics as well as your overall impression of the group of people in history the main character represents (the perspective your book is about—like:an American soldier, a holocaust survivor, or a German who resisted the Nazis).

Please post your thoughts on at least two of these questions:

  • What are the external conflicts the protagonist faces? How does the author describe this and make it important?
  • What are the internal conflicts he/she is dealing with? What are the author's ideas about this, can you get a sense of their tone or opinion?
  • What do you think the main character will or should do? Does the author give any foreshadowing clues?
  • What are the most admirable character traits of the main character? What evidence does the author give of these traits?

  6. The brothers are the ones who volunteered to take their sisters place when the nazi's were taking them to the camps. While i was reading i did find some figures of speech but not a lot. One thing that did confuse me was all the places they had mentioned like, Oberpiz, flossenburg, and czechoslovikia. Where all those places where mendek went ? Or where these the places of the camps.

    2. Bella, this isn't a prediction. This is what happened. They did volunteer, it's just the the Nazis didn't allow it. Also, If you are going to disagree withe someone, be sure to state why and provide support.

  16. I did do a little research on Auschwitz this camp was the only concentration camp that tattooed numbers on them and this was one of the larger concentration camps. This camp Auschwitz is now a historical museum. Josef Mengle was nick names "Angel of Death", Josef had an odd fascination of twins especially identical twins 88 pairs of twins came in out of about 30,000 and did experiments to the twins like to see how one feels if the other is getting hurt.

  17. Week 1: This book shows how life is as a Jewish girl/boy and what they had to go through like Bronia and her siblings would get beat up at school just because they were Jewish. Bronia has 5 siblings her older sister Mila was the first born she was jealous when Bronia was born because she was the "princess" of the house before she was born, her brother Mendek was the second born he liked math and he could sew, he also went to nine total camps, then Tulek he was the third born he didn't like school, but he did work, and he could fix anything like toys, bikes, and locks. When someone tried to escape the camp they would get shot until dead. I think the theme for these three chapters is don't judge someone by there religious beliefs because like it said in the book when Jewish kids went to school they would get beat up just because of there religious beliefs. Week 2:Jews weren't allowed to walk where they pleased or on restricted streets the Nazi police would be ordered to confiscate them if they did. Bronia was only nine years onld when she volunteered as the family smuggler. When the Nazi's came Mila got away with two others and they hid. Bronia and her parents didn't get away they were taken away to the courtyard. When they got there her mother told her to run no louder than a whisper but Bronia just stood there her mother told her to run again, so she did and she was scared but she did it any way. They would torture the Jews just to get information out of them. Mila went out and if she got got she would be sent to a concentration camp or get shot. She was gone for some time but when she returned Bronia noticed that her locket was gone. Jews had to turn in all of there possessions especially jewelry to the Nazi's and if anyone noticed jewelry on someone they would be shot and killed. In October the Jews were moved to the Ghetto. They had one house with one room two of her aunt's arrived and Bronia and her family took them in and now she had 13 people in the one house with one room. Bronia need to smuggle again so she smuggled live chickens to sell them to get money so they could buy other food. In August they were rounded up from the Ghetto and packed in a car with other random people. When they got to Auschwitz they had made lines and one guy would point right for life and left for the gas chambers Mila got right and Bronia and her two baby sister got left she quickly dashed to Mila's line a German had went over to her and beat her with the butt of his gun and asked why there was a little girl over here but he realized that it was too late to send her back to the left line.

  18. Bronia faces grieving after the lost of her sister Mila and the author shows us that she can't fend for herself without some one's help.

  19. I did some research on Ghetto's and I guess they were used to segregate Jew's from the rest of the population, some lasted for only a few days, weeks, and even several years. The vast majority of ghetto inhabitants died from disease, starvation, shot, or deported to killing centers. They could trade there money to get some food smuggled into the ghetto's but others had to beg and steal to get some food. Some individuals killed themselves to escape the horrible, hopeless lives. Many froze in the winter. But if you were a little child you had to make yourself useful because most of the young children were smuggling food and stuff in the ghetto's to survive.

  23. During the book it does show bronia as a strong girl. When she met the other girl Bozeka she had become friends with her and how she snuck Bronia into gentile barrak because she thought it'd be safer for Bronia. When the gaurds were searching for hiding jews Bronia was hiding underneath blankets. When the germans found out the russians were coming to germany the germans decided to try to hide the mass murders of all the jews by burning them. They walked to a few towns over and many people died from no food or water. Since Bronia was so small Bozenka did end up carrying Bronia because Bronia couldn't handle the walk. They eventually came to there destination, Bozenka ended up offering Bronia to come home with her. Bozenka's family ended up enrolling her into a school since Bozenka and her family did speak a different language she did have to learn the other language.

  24. It was not nice that the Nazi took over peoples homes. Bronia is going to smuggle food. On her close there are stares that has the word Jude on it Jude means Jew in German. She was trading bolts on the black market she had to be careful she did not get caught by the Germans if you did get caught you would be punished by death. They had some hiding places Bronia's mother was telling her to run when they got caught. She did slip away with out people seeing her and went to a farm till night fall. Then she want to find her sisters in there hiding places. There mother, father and brother where all killed so they where not safe in there town so they left. They found a house that they could live in. Mila sold her gold heart shaped locket to get some food for her and her sister. Two of Bronia's aunts and their families came to Sosnowiec where Bronia and her 3 sisters where they had to live in secret They got a letter from Mendek he was assigned him to stoke the camp’s cooking ovens, which kept him away from the deadly green power.

    1. I agree it just plain rude that the Nazis took people out of their homes and dump them out on the street where they had nowhere to go And they took all their personal belongings and they did not give them any notice

  25. 1 Brona now can laugh. 2 Doctor Mangala killed a bunch of people he wants end 1000 Pixies to the gas Chambers and 600 women to the gas Chambers and load it up a dump truck worth of children and prove them in a pit of fire . Dr. mangala character trait is that he's sadistic.

  27. Bronia the main character did make a significant change. Bronia was in the concentration camps for many years she made a friend her name was Bozenka. I believe that Bronia became stronger as a person being away from her family and knowing that she did leave her little sisters just to die and her parents weren't there to take care of her so she probably did feel alone. When she did go home with Bonzenka she did adapt to her surrounding meaning that she did not speak the language that Bozenka did, When her cousin did come to the door to talk to her and said that he saw her brother and she was skeptical because the hasn't seen him in years and she wasn't sure if it was him or not. Bronia eventually gets reunited with some of her family but she did have to leave Bozenka and that was difficult for her because when they did leave to walk and boronia was too weak to walk Bozenka did carry her when she could've just left Bronia and for her to die and as it does say in the book that she was boronias guardian angel. I plan on researching Auchwits because it is one of the biggest concentration camps and Joseph Stallin he was known for doing experiments on twins especially identical twins and so was josef mingle his nick name was "Angel of death" . I will try to find other things to research as well. A quote from this book that doe speak out to me is "This time i walked under my own power" saying that she has gained more strength and she has moved on .
